Many people think that eye doctors accept only vision insurance. Our offices accept most vision plans PLUS the majority of medical insurance plans, like Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
So how do you know which insurance plan,
Vision or Medical,
will cover your visit to the eye doctor?
Sometimes poor vision is caused by "refractive error", which is when your eye is the wrong shape to focus light on the retina. Some medical plans will not cover your exam if your only diagnosis is refractive error, or your eye exam is routine. If refractive error is the cause of your poor vision, you can use your vision insurance to cover your exam, or you can pay out of pocket for the exam. We have special reduced fees for patients who do not have vision plan coverage for routine exams.
However, in some cases your poor vision could be caused by a medical condition, like dry eyes, an eye infection, or even cataracts or glaucoma. If you have an underlying medical problem that causes you to see poorly, your eye exam may be covered by your medical insurance.
