Dr. Fred Setzer, OD

Dr. Fred Setzer earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Doctorate of Optometry from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry in 1975. He served as both Assistant Professor and Director of Continuing Education for the UAB School of Optometry before entering private practice from 1981 to 1991. Dr. Fred Setzer joined Sarah J. Hays, MD in 1991 and was Director of The Refractive Surgery Center in Birmingham, Alabama, and Assistant Center Director with Birmingham Omega Health Systems, Inc.until 1998. Dr. Setzer joined Montgomery Eye Physicians from 1999 until 2007 and served as Medical Director of their refractive surgery program.

Dr. Setzer now directs the optometric referral network for VisionFirst Eye Center.  In this role, he serves as a liaison between optometrists, their patients, and the VisionFirst surgeons, Dr. Mark Bearman and Dr. Sarah Hays.  Dr. Setzer also sees pre- and post-surgical patients at the Lakeshore Laser office, and at the Alabaster office.  Please call 205-941-2020 to make an appointment.

Dr. Setzer is a Fellow with the American Academy of Optometry, and a member of both the American Optometric Association and Birmingham Area Optometric Society of Alabama. 

He and his wife, Nancy, have three children and two grandchildren.
