Dr. Hays graduated with top honors, Summa Cum Laude, from Troy University and is a graduate of the University of Alabama Medical School in Birmingham. She completed her ophthalmology residency at the combined University of Alabama and Eye Foundation Hospital Program in 1983 where she served as Chief Resident. She then completed a general ophthalmology fellowship at Williamson Eye Clinic in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Dr. Hays has more than 25 years experience and has been in practice in Birmingham since 1985. She has performed over 20,000 refractive procedures and received training in all aspects of refractive surgery from some of the most renowned surgeons in the United States. Dr. Hays completed a refractive surgery fellowship with Leo Bores, MD and trained to perform LASIK with Steven G. Slade, MD and Jack Holladay, MD in Houston, TX, and with Luis Ruiz, MD in Bogotá, Columbia. She was also chosen to participate in one of the first FDA clinical trials on LASIK performed in the United States in an FDA clinical trial for the approval of LASIK.
Dr. Hays specializes in refractive surgery with i-Lasik, using a completely blade-free system of laser vision correction with the VISX laser and wavefront technology. She also performs all types of other refractive procedures including the intraocular lens implant for patients ineligible for laser vision correction surgery.
She is a board-certified Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology. She is a member in good standing with the Alabama State Medical Society, and Jefferson County Medical Society and has served as past President of the UAB Eye Foundation Medical Staff.
Dr. Hays has a daughter, Emily, and a son, Luke. She and her family reside in Birmingham.
