See Life Taking New Shape

Our Free-from-Glasses-and-Contacts Options

Medical experts have been searching for generations for ways to surgically correct vision. It wasn’t until the 1980s, with the invention of RK (radial keratotomy), that the concept became more accepted. The surgeries were successful but the results were often unpredictable. In the mid-1990s the FDA approved LASIK. And the world of vision correction would never be the same. Since then, revolutionary advances have been made in vision correction surgical procedures, and there are more options than ever before.

Distinct Correction for Each Individual—iLASIK™

We're excited to introduce iLASIK™–the ultimate in laser vision correction. This personalized procedure is the culmination of everything we've learned about LASIK over the past decade. The technology used in the iLASIK™ procedure is safe and proven. Nearly 32 million LASIK procedures have been performed to date, making it the most common elective vision procedure in the United States. By employing the same scientific advancements used in high-powered telescopes, iLASIK’s™ Wavefront technology enables each treatment to be “designed” by the unique characteristics of the individuals’ eyes. WaveScan technology produces a detailed map of the eye–much like a fingerprint, no two are alike. After the blade-free Intralase method creates the corneal flap, this information is then translated into a set of CustomVue treatment instructions for the laser. WaveScan transfers these digital treatment instructions to the laser, providing a new level of precision and accuracy. CustomVue is a good choice for individuals who struggle to achieve the visual acuteness they need with contacts or glasses, or for people who tend to see "halos" around lights or have problems with glare.

An Exciting Option for Those Who are Not Candidates for LASIK—Visian ICL™

The Visian lens is an excellent alternative to LASIK for patients who are not candidates for refractive surgery. The Visian ICL™ is the first lens of its kind to receive FDA approval for use in the United States. It is based on many years of research and development in adapting the proven technology of the IOL (intraocular lens) used for cataract surgery. The IOL cataract procedure is familiar to ophthalmologists and is performed safely on millions of patients each year. While the technology is similar, the Visian ICL™ procedure differs from cataract surgery as the natural lens is not removed from the eye. Instead, the Visian ICL™ is placed in front of the natural lens and works with it to correct vision.

For Close, Intermediate and Distance Reading-Glasses No More ReSTOR® and ReZoom™ Multifocal Lenses and Crystalens® Accommodative Lenses

Until recently, life without reading glasses or bifocals was not an option for those who reach a certain age or for most cataract patients. But now, VisionFirst is able to offer the choice of a multifocal or accommodative lens implant. These implants provide excellent vision for patients after cataract surgery at a variety of distances, as well as for people with presbyopia over the age of 45. Three types of these new generation implants, the ReSTOR®, ReZoom™ and Crystalens® are currently available. All three correct both distance vision and presbyopia after cataract surgery. For the vast majority of patients, having a multifocal or accommodative lens implant means being able to see at distance and up close without being dependent on glasses. So, patients choosing to have this type of implant will likely find that they can drive, watch television, read or do crafts without the need for glasses.

Cataracts and Astigmatism, Gone—AcrySof® Toric Lens

There are several surgical options to treat astigmatism, such as LASIK laser vision correction, astigmatic keratotomy (AK), or limbal relaxing incisions (LRI). However, those planning to have surgery to remove a cataract may now have an additional option: an implantable lens that makes it possible to treat the cataract and correct the corneal astigmatism at the same time. The AcrySof® Toric intraocular lens makes it possible to reduce or eliminate corneal astigmatism and significantly improve uncorrected distance vision, independent of eyeglasses and contact lenses.
