Dr. James B. Kelly

Dr. Kelly grew up in Florence, Alabama. He graduated from Samford University, Birmingham, and then attended the Medical College of Alabama in Birmingham. As a senior medical student, he did an exchange clerkship in Internal Medicine at Harvard Medical School at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass. During his terms in medical school he also served a one-year fellowship in Pathology at the Medical College of Alabama. He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor fraternity.

Following a rotating internship at Medical College of Alabama, Dr. Kelly enlisted in the US Air Force, serving two and a half years in Misawa, Japan. There he specialized as a general medical officer and concentrated primarily in Family Practice. During this time he became interested in eye diseases and did a clerkship in Ophthalmology at an air base near Tokyo. Upon discharge, he returned to the US to do a residency in Ophthalmology at the Eye Foundation-University Hospital eye training program.

Following an internship at Medical College of Alabama, and after five years in a group practice, he decided to practice ophthalmology independently in the Centerpoint area. During his 24 years of solo practice Dr. Kelly was involved in all phases of general and surgical ophthamology.

In April 2003, Dr. Kelly merged his practice with VisionFirst Eye Center. He is delighted to have joined Dr. Mark Bearman, an excellent cataract & refractive surgeon and Dr. Mark McClintock, who specializes in medical eye diseases, contact lenses, and eye care services at VisionFirst Eye Center.

Dr. Kelly has been a board certified ophthalmologist since 1977. He is married to Fay who is a board certified optician. They have three sons, Chris, Tim and Jon, and three grandchildren.
